What We’re Fighting Against

We aren’t just fighting against a cell; we are fighting against a culture of state-sponsored torture. It’s time to ERASE the box and bring our neighbors back to humanity.

Psychological Torture

Isolation for 22+ hours a day causes irreversible brain damage, hallucinations, and extreme anxiety. We are fighting a system where nearly 50% of prison suicides occur in solitary confinement, despite it housing only a small fraction of the population.

Hidden Under New Names

The DC DOC often hides solitary under names like "Administrative Segregation" or "Safe Cells." We are fighting to expose these practices and ensure that changing a name doesn't mean continuing the torture of 23-hour lockdowns.

Racial Inequity

Black and Brown residents in DC are disproportionately sent to the "box" and held there longer than white residents. We are fighting against a disciplinary system that weaponizes isolation against the most marginalized members of our community.

Cycle of Recidivism

Depriving people of human contact and rehabilitation makes them less prepared to re-enter society. We are fighting against a counterproductive "safety" measure that actually increases violence inside facilities and instability in our neighborhoods.
