Unlock the Box Retreat - January 2026

The National Unlock the Box Campaign convened people who have experienced solitary confinement, researchers, advocates and policymakers for a two conference in Washington, DC. A dozen Unlock the Box-DC members were in attendance on July 18th, 2025.

States of Solitary - July 2025

Journey to Justice Bus - October 2025

On October 31st, Unlock the Box helped organize the DC stop for the Journey to Justice Bus, a mobile storytelling and education space created by the national Unlock the Box campaign. The last stop on this tour was the American University Friedheim Quadrangle.

“The Strike” Watch Party - February 2025

The Unlock the Box-DC Coalition held a watch party of the documentary “The Strike” as it premiered on PBS on February 3, 2025. This inspiring film documents a massive hunger strike against solitary confinement organized by people imprisoned in California. The watch party was followed by a panel that included members Cinquan Uma Muhammad and Tamika Bruce from Free Mind Book Club, Dr. Elizabeth Allen, Department of Social Work, University of the District of Columbia, and Brittany Vazquez, Licensed Social Worker who worked at the DC Jail.

Unlock the Box Town Hall - September 2024

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Unlock the Box organized a rally and town hall at Foundry United Methodist Church. Speakers included Herbert Robinson of Unlock the Box, Maurice (Chef Reese Dixon), Reverend TC Morrow, National Religious Campaign Against Torture, and Councilmember Brianne Nadeau – the elected official who developed ERASE with the Unlock the Box Coalition. Voices Unbarred performed at the event.

UDC Solitary Confinement Event - April 2025

On April 7th, 2025, Unlock the Box hosted a community advocacy event at the University of the District of Columbia. Coalition members Devin Smith, Herbert Robinson, and Cheff Reece were part of the panel.

Unlock the Box - Listening Session - July 2025

On Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, Unlock the Box held a listening session with directly impacted people at the True Reformer Building. Participants included Herbert Robinson of Unlock the Box, Anthony Petty of Neighbors for Justice, Robert Barton from More Than Our Crimes, and members of Voices Unbarred.

Unlock the Box - ERASE Lobby Day - October 2025

On October 31st, 2025, four dozen Unlock the Box members went to the Wilson Building to meet with member of the Council of the District of Columbia to ask them to hold a hearing on the ERASE Solitary Act of 2025.
